The OpenBuilds OX is a robust CNC router platform.  The 3D Tech Ox HD is a redesigned version that adds much greater rigidity and stiffness, and a much imporved Z axis.  This is by far our best seller.  It is made entirely of extruded aluminum sections with good strength and rigidity.   A sturdy base with front and back full width legs provides stability, and V-groove extrusions form the axis tracks.  The V-groove profile provides very good rigidity with little weight.  The actuators are toothed belt type with 200 step/revolution NEMA 23 motors for maximum accuracy and robustness.  The Y-Axis v-groove extrusions have a nominal length of 1000mm.  Travel is somewhat less than the overall length to allow for width of the carriage, etc.

The Y-Axis rides on a pair of 7 wheel carriages on the v-groove extrusions.  The Gantry plates are machined aluminum, (not plastic as on some versions) and connected to each other with 3 additional V-groove extrusions that form the track for the X-Axis.  The wide wheel spacing provides maximum strength and stiffness, while allowing the carriages to move freely.  There are 2 Y-Axis NEMA 23 motors, one for each side of the Y-Axis.  Each motor has a toothed belt pulley which a fixed belt rides over.  As the motor turns, the carriage pulls itself along the fixed belt.  The belt rides in the v-groove of the track, and is held down by the v-wheels as they roll in the groove.

The X-Z axis carriage rolls over the two 80x20 bonded extrusions connecting the side gantry plates, with a similar belt drive system.  This beam is 25% stronger than the original design.  There are 4 sets of double v-wheels that roll on top of the track for strength, and two sets of double wheels on the bottom of the X-Axis carriage. The wheels connect a pair of gantry plates front and back of the track extrusions for added strength and stiffness.  The rear gantry plate mounts the stepper drive motor for the X-Axis, and the front gantry plate mounts the vertical v-wheels for the Z-Axis traveller.

The Z-Axis C-Beam extrusion is 250mm in length, with a travel of a little over 80mm.   This is double the strength of the original Ox Z axis.  The Z axis is supported by 8 widely spaced v-wheels, as opposed to 6 on the original.  The Z-Axis actuator is lead screw driven by a top mounted stepper motor.  NEMA 23 motors are used throughout give additional torque for heavier spindle motors.   A 71mm heavy router mount is included if you wish to use a Bosch Colt or a Dewalt Router.

An MDF spoil board is mounted in the bottom of the frame.  There is plenty of clearance to add an additional spoil board to make swapout easier.  The spoil board is cut perfectly square and to exact size, providing reinforcement and keeping the sides of the base paralell and square.   A double  thickness spoil board bed is recommended for more mass to dampen vibrations and additional strength of the bed.

3D Tech provides several value added improvements and tweaks to all of it's router models and kits, based on our experience with the builds.  Things like soft bump stops for all axes, upgraded bearings and small parts ensure that our machines exceed the performance of the original designs.  Extreme Solid V-Wheel upgrade and GT3 belt upgrade is standard on all models.   Additionally, the base has 40x40mm brace beams running front to back between the feet.  These beams are bolted to the feet, the side rails, and the spoil board for maximum strength and rigidity.  Additional bracing is added to our unit for the 20x80 side v-rails, tieing them to the bed by additional angle brackets to stiffen the side rails significantly.  The larger model has two additional 20 x 40 mm support beams and additional angle brackets because of the increased length.    In addition, we can work with you to customize any build to your specifications.

NEW!!!  Aluminum Bed Option now available!  Heavy duty V-slot aluminum full size bed option is available.  Allows you to use M6 Tee nuts to fasten work, hold downs, and spoil boards anywhere on the bed.  Very stable and stiff.  The ultimate in flexibility and good looks!

The system is available fully assembled, tested, and calibrated.  The assembled machine includes a 24V, 350W power supply, Arduino preprogrammed with GRBL, 4 Stepper Motor Drivers, and USB Cable.  Router spindle and tooling is not included, but can be supplied as an option.  Licence Free Software is included.
